Yemen’s government accepts talks with Shiite rebels

UN Security Council Resolution 2216 calls for the withdrawal of rebel forces from captured territories and for them to lay down their arms.

A first attempt to hold peace talks in Geneva in June between the pro-government forces and Huthi rebels collapsed without the warring parties even sitting down in the same room.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has donated SR50m (US$ 13.5m) for humanitarian aid to Yemeni refugees and constructed 300 housing units for Yemeni refugees in Djibouti, stated Yemeni Vice President Khalid Bahah and said the Saudi government is doing its best to look after the Yemeni refugees in Yemen. The Houthis have previously said they would attend, but they have not commented since the Yemeni government announcement.

With the Houthis increasingly on the back foot, they ought finally be amenable to a real negotiated solution that ends the violence in Yemen.

With the regular success of the Saudi-led military coalition – and with the steadfast resolve of the countries backing them to restore the Hadi government despite any setbacks along the way – the Houthis and other rebel forces can be under no illusion about how this conflict will conclude. “Based on this commitment, I trust that you will now be in a position to authorise your government’s participation in a new round of consultations with the Houthis and their allies”, he added. Hadi’s government last month refused to enter negotiations with the Houthis until they agreed to withdraw from territory.

On Sunday, several hundred Yemenis, including rights activists and the representatives of non-governmental organizations, gathered in front of the United Nations (UN)’s office in Sana’a, urging the world body to take serious action to put an end to the Saudi aggression. Saudi Arabia, which has led a military campaign against the rebels, has welcomed the talks. “It is considered a step in the right direction to solving the Yemeni crisis”, the ministry said in a statement attributed to a responsible source.
