Hammon spoke to reporters in San Antonio on Saturday about the summer-league gig.
Becky Hammon will coach the Spurs’ Las Vegas summer league team, according to SAEN’s Jeff McDonald. Ettore Messina and James Borrego don’t need to and Ime Udoka coached previous year, so it’s nor surprising to see Hammon get a crack at it. It’s still a big deal that a woman is getting the opportunity, simply because it hasn’t happened in the past and National Basteball Association coaching is a male dominated field. Only three of the nine teams competing in Orlando this summer – the Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, and Brooklyn Nets – qualified for the playoffs last season.
Her move to the Spurs coaching ranks followed a 16-year playing career in the WNBA. “I’ve always been someone who did it uphill”, Hammon said in August. I’m up for being outside the box, making tough decisions and challenges. And I’m a little bit of an adrenaline junkie. The two will swap jobs for the action in Las Vegas, which runs July 10-20.

The Spurs will first play in a summer league at Utah starting Monday, when theyll be led by video coordinator Will Hardy.
