Matt Stonie took an early lead in the ten-minute competition and never relinquished it, finishing with 62 hot dogs to Chestnut’s 60.

He was now going for his ninth consecutive win at the annual Fourth of July event, held on New York’s Coney Island.

This year, he’ll face off against ex- champ Takeru Kobayashi.

Afterward his victory, Stonie, holding his fist in the air in victory, said it felt fantastic to win. Ultimately, he beat Chestnut by two hot dogs. The Major League Eating group and ESPN signed a long term deal, with the sports network showing the contest through 2024.

The weigh-in event featured a ceremonial stare down between the competitors, Associated Press reports. Said Chestnut after his loss, “I just didn’t find my rhythm”.

Chestnut won past year, devouring 61 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Hes naturally the hot favorite but 22-year-old Matt Stonie is on a mission to steal the mustard belt from Chestnuts surprisingly trim girth.

It’s July 4, and that means it’s time to eat some hot dogs – way too many hot dogs. He now holds the record with 69 hot dogs, which he set in 2013, consuming all of them in 10 minutes.

The security included police dogs that apparently were not thrown off by the scent of the grilled meat.
