It’s the 11th time the Wildcats were picked to win the conference since 1998-99, but coach John Calipari’s squad doesn’t have the preseason player of the year. Vanderbilt was chosen second, followed by Texas A&M, LSU and Georgia.

LSU freshman Ben Simmons and junior Tim Quarterman were named to the preseason All-SEC teams announced here Wednesday at the ESPNU/SEC Network headquarters as part of the annual SEC TipOff 16, the conference’s annual men’s basketball media day. Previous year the team had it’s best season in program history as they won a school-record 34 games as well as advancing to the school’s first Final Four. The hype will only continue to grow for the Tigers’ prized recruit, as the media has named him the preseason SEC Player of the Year, becoming just the second freshman to be predicted to win the award. Florida’s Dorrian Finney-Smith, Kentucky’s Tyler Ulis, Texas A&M’s Danuel House and Vanderbilt’s Damian Jones also received votes in the Player of the Year voting.
