Chicken burgers being recalled due to possible salmonella contamination

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) just issued a similar warning a few days ago after 44 people in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador were sickened with Salmonella. Illness onset dates in that Canadian outbreak were given as February 7 to May 23, 2015.

Sofina Foods Inc.is the manufacturer of the affected No Name chicken burgers and Compliments chicken strips and chicken nuggets.

Part of the problem may be that the victims had not cooked the chicken thoroughly, with the products themselves appearing to be ready to eat given they are breaded and pre-browned, but are in fact raw underneath.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

You may want to check your frozen breaded chicken products before you pop them into the oven as a number of No Name and Compliments packaged items have been recalled. Others may have been lax about washing their hands after handling the pre-browned products, she said. Use one cutting board for raw poultry and a separate one for fresh produce and cooked foods. Routine interviews of the cases revealed that they numerous cases reported eating frozen, pre-browned, single-serving, microwavable stuffed chicken products during the week before illness onset.

The MDA Dairy and Food Division collected products for testing that S. Enteritidis cases had purchased at the same time as the products consumed in the week before their illness. Whole poultry should be cooked to an internal temperature of 82°C (180°F). Most people recover without treatment. People who are infected with Salmonella bacteria can be infectious from several days to several weeks. The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after exposure to the organism.

The Government of Canada is committed to food safety.

The recall was triggered by findings by a CFIA investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak and the agency says an ongoing food safety investigation may lead to the recall of other products.
