With Clinton set to appear before Congress over the Benghazi terrorist attack issue, the attack on Brennan’s emails is likely to complicate matters for her over the use of private server for official communications.
In addition to the information contained on Brennan’s SF86, the director’s home telephone number, his wife’s Social Security number, and information about family members was stolen. The hacker, who said he was motivated by his support for Palestine, had bragged on Twitter for several weeks about his apparent access to personal accounts belonging to government officials.
The responsibility for the hack was claimed by a high school student, who said that he had found work-related files, as reported by the New York Post.
In the Iran document, written in late 2007, Brennan says that Iran is a “major player on the world stage” and it is in the interest of United States to “establish a direct dialogue with Tehran”.
Six documents published on the Wikileaks website include a draft security clearance application containing personal information. So it’s no surprise that it’s now leaked the pilfered files of the CIA’s director, John Brennan.
Although he didn’t specifically call for the regime of financial sanctions that the Obama administration, along with Europe, Russian Federation and China, pushed against Iran, Brennan told the president-elect to ‘hold out meaningful carrots as well as sticks’.
Obama brought Brennan, who had previously run the National Counterterrorism Center under President George W. Bush, into the administration right after taking office as his adviser on homeland security and counterterrorism. A draft document on priorities for the US intelligence committee recommend that the CIA director be given a fixed 10-year term like the Federal Bureau of Investigation director, something other analysts have also called for.
The paper also suggested naming former Secretary of State Colin Powell as a special USA envoy to Iran to facilitate the process. “Rather than authorizing intelligence agencies to use only those techniques that are allowed under the [Army Field Manual], I believe the more prudent approach is to preclude the use of the specific techniques that are prohibited under the AFM”, Bond wrote.
On Wednesday, the secret-spilling group published a series of selected messages and attachments from a trove of emails taken from Brennan’s AOL account. However this is likely to be just the tip of the iceberg, as Wikileaks and the hacker responsible are planning to release more documents in the coming days.
