“We won the first three and then we haven’t done much after that”, Detroit captain Henrik Zetterberg summed up succinctly.
The Red Wings (3-4-0) have now dropped four straight. “I thought we improved at lots of things, but there’s things we got to get better at for sure”.
Gustav Nyquist and Brendan Smith scored first-period power-play goals as Detroit lost its fourth straight. Shortly thereafter, the Detroit Red Wings regained the lead and held on to it until 1:12 left in the game. Karri Ramo yielded four goals in an eventual 6-2 setback to Washington on Tuesday before being sent to the minors two days later.TV: 9 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, RSN (Calgary)ABOUT THE RED WINGS (3-3-0): Detroit failed on six power-play opportunities versus Edmonton and its last 13 overall in the last three-plus games. “We had some guys really going and some guys were just OK and some guys didn’t have great games”.
“At the end of the day we didn’t get the extra point and that’s all that matters”, said Howard.
“It makes it a little bit tougher”, DeKeyser said. “We got caught on a long shift there (on the Giordano goal)”.
Time began to wind to an end as the Flames continued to sit down a goal looking to tie the game any way they could.
Giordano scored a goal to tie the game midway through the first period. Smith – back in the lineup after sitting for two games – wound up from the blue line, and his shot hit a stick to deflect past Hiller while he was screened this time by Riley Sheahan.
Calgary forward Mason Raymond had the best chance in the second, but his wrist shot ricocheted off both Howard and the post.
Petr Mrazek is expected to get the start in goal in place of Jimmy Howard, who made 37 saves Friday and is 2-1-1 with a 2.24 goals-against average.
The former Caps defenseman was hurt after being teed up by Flames center Josh Jooris behind the Wings’ net.
Not to be outdone, Hiller made a pair of nice blocker saves on scoring attempts by Dylan Larkin and Tomas Tatar to keep the Flames in the game.
They probably didn’t expect to lose – on Calgary’s Mark Giordano’s goal winning it 3-2 – but the fast pace and thrilling offensive chances going either way turned out to be just as predicted.
Colborne was able to tip a Giordano point shot past Howard in the third. Jeff Blashill, pictured, who spent the last three seasons guiding Detroit’s AHL farm team, is the new coach… They got the puck from behind their own net into the Calgary zone, and a few more high to low back to high passes ended with Smith with the puck at the point. “We got to do a better job of getting through”.
