Flames broke out around 4:30 Friday afternoon at Congregation Poile Zedek Synagogue on 145 Neilson Street.
Nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution.
The cause of the fire is also unknown, though CBS New York reports that it began on the third floor.
Firefighters were also shooting hose streams through the charred front doors of the synagogue. But by 6 p.m. flames were no longer visible as firefighters kept dousing water on it. Congregation Poile Zedek Synagogue is over 100 years old and became a historic building in 1995. No injuries were reported. “Students from Rutgers University, just a few blocks away, often join us for services”.
