Thanks to a three-week layoff after the French Open, the two biggest stars in women’s tennis are feeling 100 percent fit ahead of the Wimbledon fortnight.

Maria Sharapova claimed she loves the peace and quiet of Wimbledon – as her grunting set the decibel levels soaring.

“I was quite pleased with the way things went today”, Sharapova said in her post-match presser. “I certainly did that”, the Australian, who has played 56 five-setters in grand slams during his career, told reporters.

“I just wanted to take care of business and I thought I did a good job”, she said after completing a brisk but not entirely straightforward victory. “I do get goosebumps walking into this place”, he said.

Konta was swiftly despatched 6-2 6-2 on Centre Court by an on-song Sharapova and afterwards revealed a masochistic streak, announcing she was “one of the luckiest athletes in the world” to be facing Venus and Serena Williams sisters next.

Konta insisted she was unfazed by either the occasion or the opponent in reacting to her defeat to Sharapova, then immediately switched focus to her doubles duties.

But Cech, who was twice named in the PFA team of the year during his time at Chelsea, played understudy to Courtois last season and made just 15 appearances in all competitions, prompting his move to north London.

The top-seeded Serb says “there are certain ways of communication which is encouragement, which is support, which is understanding the moment when to clap or say something that can lift my energy up, that can kind of motivate me to play a certain point. I think any person looks up to him”. It’s such a fine line.

“I planned on going to Florida”.

But the Channel Islander then recovered and fought back as the crowd on Court 12 willed her on, and she took the second set 6-3. “Ultimately, I’m taking it one day at a time and I’m not thinking that far”.

In the sixth game of her first-round match against Margarita Gasparyan of Russian Federation, a qualifier ranked 113th, Williams slid on the grass and fell during a point. My earliest memory of candy is being a little girl back in Russian Federation and asking my parents for a lollipop after a good practice on the tennis court, ‘ she said. “I didn’t feel overwhelmed by the situation, nor did I feel overwhelmed by the player I was playing”. I have nothing to lose here. So when the name Sugarpova came about and I put the two together, I realised how much fun this could be.’.
