Orioles starter Wei-Yin Chen allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings after being recalled before the game from a brief stint in the minor leagues. Adam LaRoche homered and hit two doubles Wednesday in Minneapolis. Hitting.228, statistically this is one of the worst seasons of LaRoche’s career, but he’s bounced back from a slow start and has been producing with some power, hitting eight home runs and driving in 27 runs despite being on pace for a career high in strikeouts.
The White Sox also saw their offense shut down on Wednesday afternoon as Minnesota’s Phil Hughes tossed eight solid innings in a 6-1 win over Chicago.
Joakim Soria gave up two hits in the ninth inning, but struck out one to record his 17th save in 19 chances.
Miguel Cabrera struck out, but Martinez found the gap in right-center to clear the bases on Samardzija’s 110th and final pitch. Castellanos walked on a full count.
