American Airlines has said at meetings with employees it sees its Miami hub as its hub for Africa going forward, and Miami also touts the best geographic location to connect North America to Africa from.

As many smaller airlines went bankrupt, others merged with larger carriers.
American threw goodbye parties at Phoenix Sky Harbor global Airport and other cities on the route Friday, drawing hundreds of employees, passengers and aviation geeks, most with smartphone cameras in hand to capture the arrival and departure of the Airbus A321 and the festivities. Staffing levels at airports have been increased by more than 20%. However, this is partially buoyed by the benefits of low oil prices.
“I don’t think it’s bad at all”, said Brett Snyder of airline industry blog The Cranky Flier. “The strong dollar has put pressure on [foreign exchange] and the weakness in Latin America has put pressure on one of American’s biggest markets…”
For now, the plan is to make the switch, watch what happens, and be ready to do whatever they can to keep the joined operation running smoothly. This is before even taking into account future merger efficiencies that will come into effect over the next year, lowering operating costs. The merger hasn’t been ideal, but so far there haven’t been any major integration-related snafus. In Q2 alone AA paid $223 million in interest expenses, something it could greatly reduce by paying down its debt.
The company also advises fliers to use the same tools to check their terminal and gate before leaving for the airport, and for any last-minute changes or flight notifications.
Executives did not anticipate any asset divestitures when they announced the deal in February 2013.
The hope is that fliers will hardly notice the computer transition-but one element of the weekend’s shift will be very visible. Doug Parker, who was already CEO of the US Airways Group, became the CEO of the new American Airlines Group.

The carrier’s pilots ratified a joint agreement in January and it reached a joint agreement with its flight attendants union in December 2014. Both contracts included pay raises and five-year terms.

The cutbacks started after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, followed by the the closing of US Airways’ Pittsburgh hub in 2004. However, there is still concern as other major airline mergers have resulted in problems shortly after occurring, reports CNBC.
