The child’s death was reported Saturday evening in a news release from OU Medical Center and The Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City.
Chambers’ father, Floyd Chambers of Oologah, told The Oklahoman newspaper he couldn’t believe his daughter was involved and said she was not an alcoholic. “Multiple law enforcement agencies are assisting”, Fallin wrote, and later tweeted that she was heading to Stillwater to be with the mourners.
“She is not an alcoholic that I’m aware of”, he said, adding that he would pray for the families and friends of the victims.
“At first we thought it was part of the show”, Konda Walker, a 1991 graduate of OSU, told the local Stillwater News Press.
“I can’t describe it any more clearly than this: People flying in the air”, Sims said.
Dave Kapple of Houston, Texas, told the paper that he was about 10 feet away when the auto came barrelling through the crowd of spectators at the end of the parade, just blocks from campus.
Police have updated the number of people injured in the Oklahoma State parade crash to 34 and say eight of them are in critical condition. A few lingered to look at the aftermath: water bottles, blankets, lawn chairs and other items strewn all over the intersection.
Streets were blocked off and secured by members of the National Guard.
“We are heartbroken at this tragedy and my thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who died and of those who are injured”, said Gina Noble, Stillwater Oka. mayor. “That’s what’s going to be in my mind for forever”, Epperson said.
Kansas University is scheduled to play OSU in football Saturday.
