Stoppage-time goal gives Portland another victory | Sports | The Register

PORTLAND, Ore. >> The offensively shorthanded San Jose Earthquakes held firm defensively for 90 minutes Sunday evening at Providence Park, but conceded a Jack Jewsbury stoppage-time goal as the Portland Timbers downed the Quakes 1-0.

San Jose was unable to clear a free kick in its area, which gave Jewsbury the chance run in and make a jumping shot, floating the ball over Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham and into the net for his second goal of the season.

Portland fell 2-0 to Real Salt Lake but will be looking back at their 4-1 Cascadia Cup win over Seattle Sounders last week for inspiration ahead of this one.

San Jose Earthquakes will be without Sanna Nyassi as the winger is suspended, while Innocent Emeghara and Steven Lenhart are both still injured. Portland now sits at fifth place with 28 points from 18 games played of the MLS 34-game schedule. Adam Kwarasey has 43 saves and has allowed six goals in his last two starts. Dairon Asprilla is questionable with an ankle injury.
