YouTube to Launch Ad-Free Subscription Service on October 28th

According to Fusion, the YouTube community is “furious” at the idea of having to pay nearly hard-earned money for practically the same service.

On the surface, this comparison has merit. It will normally cost $10 a month to stream YouTube Red and those on Apple Inc. Netflix is a disruptive service and an indispensable tool in the cord-cutter arsenal.

If you are streaming music on YouTube Red on your phone and want to open other apps, you can set background play so that you keep the music playing as you do other things. YouTube has apparently contacted vloggers, including Hank and John Green, and asked them to provide exclusive content for paying subscribers. But that’s not the case, so it’s time to chill on all the “next Netflix” talk.

At this point, most people seem to understand that YouTube Red will not replace the video site’s ad-supported offering, but there have still been a few misleading headlines.

“It’s hard to ignore that YouTube appears to have named its new service after a porn site”, he wrote.

“As a YouTube Partner, I’m not sure how to respond to this Red coercion”, YouTube partner Wilkin Brutus said on Twitter. “Now, it’s the user, voting with their pocket, telling us what their eyeballs are worth”. YouTube Red doesn’t have a confusing business model. The rise in popularity of subscription-based services may signal an important shift in the landscape, as it compensates artists for their work and allows users to listen to music or watch videos without ads.

Currently, the analysts at Merrill Lynch estimate YouTube to generate around $5 to $7 annual ad revenue per user.

While Google has to be happy with securing 99 per cent of content for its new $9.99 a month service, ESPN leaves a pretty large whole.

Yes, if YouTube Red succeeds, the rich get richer. They just won’t get any of the new perks that come with membership, including original content. Both ESPN’s NacionESPN and X games channels are still available for viewing at the time of writing, but every other channel which totals 11 of the 13 are private, stating the channel has no content on the page for viewers to see.
