Vin Diesel, Elijah Wood discuss taking on ‘The Last Witch Hunter’

Wood plays Kaulder’s right-hand man, a priest who has sworn his service, and Leslie is a good witch that Kaulder meets after he gets into a fight at her bar. For more come back next week at 4:50 or 5:50 during All Things Considered on Friday or go online to ketr.org and search for Movie Picks with Alice Reese. Vin Diesel is known for playing roles like this and he shines here. About 800 years ago, Kaulder (Diesel) tromps around a forest in his best Euro-tribal drag, complete with inexplicable gingery beard and a fierce weave. And third…Vin Diesel and his screen presence.

The movie starts out in olden times, where a band of warriors, led by Kaulder decides to take out a coven of witches. The way we are similar, ironically, and this is something that begins to play out in this movie and will be further explored in the sequel of this movie, but I don’t think that Kaulder is that judgmental. Along the way Kaulder acquires a lively sidekick (Rose Leslie, who gives the movie a boost), a beneficent witch with special powers who runs a tavern serving various inebriating and magical potions.

A great deal of The Last Witch Hunter’s running time is devoted to Vin Diesel making that face. Facial hair and fiery blades aren’t enough to carry this cheesy mess of CGI-heavy witch-battling though, and in our growing list of favourite Lasts, Witch Hunter sits somewhere between Airbender and Mohicans, but far short of the Summer Wine. He lives in modern day Manhattan in a swank, high-rise apartment and when he’s not having one-night stands with flight attendants, he’s conversing with his confidant, played by Michael Caine, who essentially plays butler Alfred Pennyworth to Kaulder’s Bruce Wayne.

“I was surprised by the script”, the Lord of the Rings star continued.

After seeing him spawn an entire generation of modified vehicle lovers, Vin Diesel now is seen in an unfamiliar genre: supernatural action.

Diesel’s simply Diesel. You know what you’re getting.

I say from a few experience there’s a lot to recommend a good old game of D&D, especially if you have a little imagination. Diesel is unable to understand why his abs would generate so much interest among people. You know the one: Head cocked slightly to one side, eyes squinted, mouth turned down, a mixture of anguish, confusion, and mild gastric discomfort furrowing his brow. Unfortunately, this one missed the mark on the fun part.
