Election results: Liberal red starts to colour Atlantic provinces

Major commitments by the Liberal campaign include legalizing recreational marijuana sales and running three years of deficits to build infrastructure across the country.

Pablo Rodriguez, who had helped lead the party in Quebec even though he lost his east-Montreal seat in 2011, regained it Monday.

Trudeau also recognizes York as a growing region that is “hugely important” in the economic development of Ontario, she said.

The NDP leader had overseen the 2011 Orange Wave that brought the party to official opposition status for the first time, but will be relegated to third party status once again as the Conservatives become the opposition. It’s time they take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror. “That’s something that has not been accomplished since 1908”.

“There’s just no way to make that happen without leaving your party in, like, an existential crisis at the end if things hadn’t gone well”, he said in an interview.

Most troubling for the NDP are questions about how Horwath will stand up to the next election.

The Liberals ran 18 aboriginal candidates, and seven of the eight who won are new to Parliament.

Trudeau, meanwhile, romped to victory in his riding of Papineau and his party also fared well in western Quebec as well as in the Eastern Townships ridings south of Montreal down to the USA border.

“It’s a message that I’m proud to deliver here with a big smile as a Liberal, as a Trudeau and as a Quebecer”, he said.

Lowballing Trudeau – and by extension the Liberal campaign – was a mistake the NDP should never have made, according to public affairs consultant and former journalist Robin Sears.

“Why did you not unleash the hounds on him?” asked Mr. Wells.

Ready or not, a Trudeau is returning to 24 Sussex Drive, completing the first father-son dynasty in Canada’s federal government history. That plan was to reflect the fact as many as 70 per cent of Canadians wanted change and the middle class, by far the largest cohort of voters, felt it had been stagnating for a decade.

While a few may be tired of yet another change-up, this time on the federal scene, and may feel the political landscape is left in a very unstable state, the general consensus is that this change will do the nation good.

Furthermore, New Democrat supporters might have reacted negatively.

Nevertheless, the ability of the Liberals to win votes off the island of Montreal among francophones was something that could not be tracked by province wide polling alone. “We met with and talked with as many Canadians as we could, and we listened”.

Not since 1980 have the Liberals done this well in Quebec, when the elder Trudeau won 74 out of 75 seats.

The NDP’s support also seemed to take a hit at the French-language debates.

“From our point of view, we saw an immediate drop in support, particularly in Quebec”, Ms. McGrath said.

Wynne frequently battled Stephen Harper over a lack of federal co-operation on a host of issues while urging voters to abandon the divisive Conservatives for Trudeau’s positive vision.

“It is a strong message, not only here but across Atlantic Canada that the people want change, and they’re going to get it”, Casey told supporters at a pub in Amherst. “It didn’t kind of attach on to any particular place, partly because our positions were identical with the Liberals”. Despite reaching the traditional threshold for a majority government in the popular vote, the Liberals should not have been able to win a majority government based on the 2011 distribution of their support. “I don’t think the NDP or the Liberals were as effective in crushing the Tories for such use of toxic messaging as they should have been”. High-profile MPs, including deputy leader Megan Leslie, Peter Stoffer, Jack Harris, Paul Dewar, Nycole Turmel and Peggy Nash lost their seats.
