Danny Lee wins Greenbrier Classic in 4-man playoff

The head of Streb’s Scotty Cameron putter came off when he innocently tossed it to his caddie after completing the ninth hole.

An act of kindness may have given New Zealand golfer Danny Lee the “good karma” needed to win the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia.

“This far exceeded my expectations, so really happy about it”, Streb said. And Lee admits he suddenly became nervous.

“I did not mean to do that”, Streb said after his putter struck the bottom of his bag. Lee laid up into the fairway, then hit his third to about 60 feet.

“I never get tired of playing golf”, Lee said.

Lee, a South Korean-born New Zealander, grabbed a $1.2 million paycheck for his trouble.

Lee and Hearn earned places in next week’s Open Championship on the Old Course at St. Andrews. All three will have hopes to play in the Presidents Cup and contribute to what has been a losing cause for the worldwide team. The 36-year-old’s runner-up pushed aside his previous season-best T6 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans as well as a personal-best T12 at the 2012 Greenbrier.

Danny Lee would make a huge birdie on the 17th hole to get to 13-under and parred 18 to enter the clubhouse tied with Kisner and Streb.

Streb broke his putter on the ninth as he flipped it to his bag and putted the final nine holes with a sand wedge. “It was not my intent, but that was what happened”.

Streb birdied holes 10, 11, 13, 16 and 18 with the wedge, which only betrayed him during a three-putt on No. 17. But things fell apart early on the second hole for Hearn when his drive on the par-5 17th ended up behind a tree.

Hearn still winless: After 164 PGA Tour events, the 36-year-old Canadian still hasn’t won and Sunday represented only his second runner-up finish.

“I’m going to be pinching myself the whole week”.

He finished with a three-under par 67 with his only blemish a dropped shot at the seventh. I’ve been so close so many times this year and to win one, wow. This is Kisner’s third runner-up finish in his breakout year.

As it turned out, only Henley finished at 12 under, shooting the day’s low round of 63.

Tiger Woods showed signs of returning to form yesterday by firing a three-under 67 – his first bogey-free round since August 2013. “But it takes time, I’m pleased with what I’ve been able to do though”. “I had full control over all the clubs”.

The victory is a special one for Lee.
