Elon Musk responds to Consumer Reports’ negative rating of Tesla Model S

The issues reported by Models S owners include problems like screeching noises, and motors which require changing before the end of warranty.

Consumer Reports sent a survey to 1,400 Model S owners asking about the reliability of their auto… and the results were not pretty.

Consumer Reports might have withdrawn its endorsement of Tesla Motors’ Model S electric sports sedan because of reliability issues, but another service says the car’s dependability is starting to improve.

Of the owners who have reported problems, the majority have trouble with the drivetrain, power equipment, charging equipment, the touch screen on the center console and various squeaks, rattles and leaks.

It’s clear Musk isn’t too concerned about losing the hallowed “Recommended” rating, given the overall customer satisfaction with the Tesla vehicles. Tesla warned that though these features are useful, control of the vehicle still rests with the driver, and therefore, they should have their hands on the wheels.

The survey in December’s issue, released Tuesday, predicts the reliability of 2016 cars and trucks based on a survey of its subscribers.

Musk said Tesla’s negotiations with officials on Chinese production have been quite encouraging and it is likely the company will cooperate with a local partner.

Consumer Reports has dropped the bomb on Tesla on Monday when it stopped recommending it to consumers. It could even be a bigger problem for Tesla if they had not made themselves clear when they rolled out the new update.

The price of Tesla shares had climbed by the closing bell, but it still ended the day down 6.6%. “Over-the-air software updates allow Tesla to diagnose and fix most bugs without the need to come in for service”.

Complaints about the drive system have also increased as the Model S cars have aged – specifically for the 2013 model, which was the car’s first full model year, the magazine said. “In instances when hardware needs to be fixed, we strive to make it painless”.
