Newly promoted Watford have signed France midfielder Etienne Capoue from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur for an undisclosed club record fee, they said today.

On their website, Watford saidthey were “delighted to announce” the signing “for a clubrecord transfer fee” without elaborating.

However, he failed to secure a first-team place after falling out of favour with Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino.

In total he made 19 appearances in all competitions for Spurs last season, scoring a single goal and providing two assists.

The Frenchman becomes the Hornets’ fifth summer signing, following Sebastian Prodl from Werder Breman, Giedrius Arlauskis from Steaua Bucharest and Jose Holebas from Roma.

Watford are also expected to announce a deal for Spurs’ Benjamin Stambouli some time within the next few days.

Remarkably, Capoue managed just one league match between November 2014 and the end of last season, as injuries and poor form got the better of him. Lewis Holtby joined Hamburg, while another midfielder in Paulinho was sold to Guangzhou Evergrande of the Chinese Super League.
