Android users will get new emojis soon, following uproar about Apple’s emoji

Android’s SVP for the Google’s mobile OS is giving the thumbs-up for the middle finger emoji (and a variety of others) to finally come to Android. After Android users complained of the new emojis making it impossible for them to read online messages and posts, Google seems to have sprung into action and is working on offering new Android emojis.

New emojis in iOS 9 include the a detective, the middle finger, a lion, unicorn, turkey and squirrel, as well as weather emojis and food emojis such as cheese, hot dog, taco, popcorn and champagne, among many others.

The lying face, shruggie, nauseated and sneezing emoji are among 67 proposed additions, released in an updated list last week, from the nonprofit Unicode Consortium. It included several features including a security update, bug fixes, and a new Live Photos feature.

It’s safe to say that Android will add the upcoming emojis via a new minor bug-centric software update for Marshmallow.

The story behind the story: While Android usually adopts common standards, it’s been a little slow to pick up on the new emoji in Unicode 8.0.

An exact Android emoji set release date has not been announced. But before you start gleefully anticipating your Wild West/?”Beauty and the Beast” crossover emoji fanfic opportunities, keep in mind that it can take a long time for an emoji proposal to actually make it onto a phone or computer.
