Remembering RK Laxman: Lesser known facts about common man’s cartoonist

He died on January 26, 2015, due to multi-organ failure.

Laxman was born on October 24, 1921 in Delhi and started off his career as a part-time cartoonist in local newspapers and magazines.

Similar to Laxman’s notable artistic creations, the doodle delineates a black-and-white studio in three sections, containing his work area, the artist sitting on a seat drawing his renowned “Common Man” on canvas, with the Common Man sneaking a look at the rear of it.

Every now and then, Google makes a few spontaneous changes to its logo to celebrate events and anniversaries of well-known personalities. His first full-time job was as a political cartoonist for The Free Press Journal in Mumbai.

The Common Man, an elderly gentleman, dressed in a checked coat and a dhoti, would always be a part of his work.

We have all been amazed by RK Laxman’s Common Man cartoon at a few point in our lives. A few of his cartoons appeared in Hindi films such as Mr and Mrs ’55.

There is a chair named after RK Laxman at Symbiosis global University.

The author of the Malgudi Days, R.K. Narayan, is R.K. Laxman’s older brother.

Among the honours bestowed on him are Padma Vibhushan, Magsaysay Award in 1984 for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts, B D Goenka Award – Indian Express, Durga Ratan Gold medal- Hindustan Times.
