Country star Carrie Underwood has described her time on “American Idol” as, “the most horrifying thing”. “I was in L.A., of all places, by myself, putting myself out there, which is a scary thing for anybody to do”.

Carrie went on to add that her first plane ride was when she had to fly out to L.A. on her own, and the only thing she had in her mind was that if nothing ever came of her experience, then she still got to do “the coolest thing” ever, but then she went on and won the whole season. “But I guess that is a huge fear until you are actually holding your child in your arms and you’re like, ‘Wow, I just met you yesterday, but I would do anything for you.’ I feel like we learned, at the end of the day, we aren’t going to break him”. On “What I Never Knew I Always Wanted”, which Underwood co-wrote with Lindsey and Brett James, she crafts a pretty little thank-you to her hockey-player husband, Mike Fisher, and their infant son, Isaiah, for changing her life, singing, “I didn’t know there was a hole, something missing in my soul, till you filled it up with your love”.

The biggest earner of the American Idol series, this is her fifth album of shiny, overbearing country rock.

Sometimes, Carrie Underwood just can’t help herself. “I was never like, ‘I want kids so bad.’ And now that I have Isaiah in my life, I’m like, ‘What did I do before?'” “She’s got a really sexy slinky quiet voice, too”.

“Sometimes we just need to get back to what’s simple, and what’s real”, she says.

“It’s about not knowing I needed either of them until I had them”, she says.

For the first time since her debut album 10 years ago, Underwood teams with more than one producer.
