After failing to break through, soldiers opened fire at the attacker, who is reported to have fled.

The perimeter has been sealed off by police, with a helicopter flying overhead, he said.

Local newspaper La Dernière heure reports that the auto was found abandoned near the barracks, shortly after the incident, and that a bomb disposal squad has been dispatched due to concerns that there may be an explosive in the vehicle. It was likely to have been stolen, said a police source.

Only around 50 military personnel are now in Flawinne, as those normally based there are on an exercise overseas.

Since the May 2014 attack by a lone gunman on the Jewish museum in Brussels in which four people were killed, Belgium has been on high alert for further extremist attacks.

In January, Belgium police killed two men in a major counter-terrorism raid, just a week after the deadly Charlie Hebdo attacks in the French capital Paris.
