Lowry and Thorson earn Big Ten honors

Cook shares this week’s offensive award with Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett, who had 324 yards of total offense and five TD in Ohio State’s win over Rutgers.

The split award couldn’t be more fitting moving into the Spartans’ bye week.

Ohio State (8-0, 4-0 Big Ten) is off this week. A total of six conference schools have become bowl eligible, a group that also includes Iowa, Michigan State and Ohio State.

It’s the fourth time Barrett, a sophomore, has won the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Award. “It’s a big component that (Cook) is able to play as well as he is”.

The feat has been accomplished only twice by players other than Barrett since the start of last season, as Indiana quarterback Nate Sudfeld was responsible for five touchdowns on October 17, 2015, and former Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon scored five touchdowns on September 20, 2014. He completed 14 of 18 passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns and ran 13 times for 101 yards and two scores. Cook, who had a very solid season a year ago, no matter how you break it down, has improved in nearly every category since then.

Connor Cook has been MVP in the Big Ten championship game and the Rose Bowl, and he led the league in passing last season.

Now, behind Cook, MSU has the opportunity to return the favor.
