10 fire tenders and eight water tankers were rushed to the spot. The fire, which occurred in the central region of the huge market, also destroyed huge stocks of packaging material stored on the premises.

Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta visited the spot and asked locals who gathered around the market to keep a safe distance from the mishap site. “We are taking adequate precautions and have stationed the fire engines in case the flames erupt once again”, said a fire official.

“Our loss could have minimised if fire officials had taken our call seriously”.

Mr Ambekar clarified that the fire brigade with the entire force was present at the market to douse the fire. But, if there is a need to upgrade the system, then I would discuss it with the Municipal Commissioner. “We have successfully brought the situation under control”.
