Commander Derek Frick was shot just before 8 p.m. near the intersection of Higgins Boulevard and Alvar Street, the New Orleans Police Department said.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu spoke with reporters after visiting Frick at University Medical Center. He was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition. The reward for information leading to an arrest or conviction has been doubled by Crimestoppers to $10,000.

Police are now searching for the suspect who they think got away in a tan colored SUV.

Several NOPD officers and Louisiana State Police troopers began a search for the gunman in the area where the shooting occurred.

The Fraternal Order of Police said the shooting is another example of how unsafe police work can be, both on and off the job.

New Orleans Police Officer Vernell Brown died in July after being struck by a vehicle while investigating an accident on USA 90 in eastern New Orleans.
