Hamilton revels in ‘amazing’ third title success

Hamilton could be heard crying over team radio after taking the chequered flag. “Thank you so much, guys, for everything you do”. I owe it all to my Dad and my family who sacrificed so much. Torro Rosso’s Max Verstappen and Force India’s Sergio Perez completed the top five.

Lewis Hamilton admits that he is humbled to have won his third Formula 1 world championship title.

“Something like that (his late error) has never happened to me ever”.

Amid various crashes, spins and safety auto periods, Ricciardo nosed his Red Bull past Rosberg on lap 12, then passed Hamilton three laps later to take the lead, set the fastest lap and increased his lead to 10 seconds.

“We were singing “We Are The Champions” in the auto as we drove home”.

“Amazing. I can’t find the right words to tell you how unbelievable this feels”, he said.

“For me the target was always to get the three Ayrton had”. “That wasn’t intentional, we were both very deep into it. He was on the outside, it was wet – there wasn’t grip – he was turning and we touched”, Hamilton said. “You just can not complain”.

“Now he’s only as good as I am!” Everything I compete in, I want to win. Championships mean greatness – yours and your team’s! Nico was driving really well too.

“We need to build him up again in the next few days, but it’s an incredible feeling, double constructors’ and drivers’ champions”.

The victory, on a roller-coaster afternoon of enthralling racing, was Hamilton’s third in four Grands Prix held in Austin and made the 30-year-old the first driver to win 10 or more races in successive seasons.

Trailblazing Lewis Hamilton was left close to tears and nearly speechless after securing his third drivers’ world championship with victory at a frantic United States grand prix last night.
