The Oprah Touch: Weight Watchers Skyrockets After Icon Takes Stake

That’s what Winfrey has earned – at least on paper – in the day and a half since she took a 10% stake in the company. The company also said instead of just focusing on weight loss, it’s shifting focus to overall health and wellness. The Queen of Talk is on a crash diet again, but this time it has to do with her newest business venture.

Winfrey’s acquisition of 10% of Weight Watchers sent the company’s stock soaring Monday morning, reported CNN Money.

Even after a huge rally, shares are still off more than 25% this year.

Ms Winfrey, one of the world’s richest celebrities, who has fought a long – and public – battle to control her weight, said she was forming a partnership with Weight Watchers global to inspire people worldwide to lead a healthier life.

According to the deal, Winfrey will make use of an app designed by Weight Watchers and will be placed under a personal coach for the weight loss regimen.

Nevertheless, research has cast doubt on whether the 52-year-old Weight Watchers plan actually work, and people who were randomly assigned to follow its diet did only slightly better than a comparison group, the newspaper added. “You can cut back on calories, but that disregards a basic fact that our body fights back as we lose weight”.

Analysts expect the television personality to use her influence to promote interest in Weight Watchers meetings and products.

Oprah Winfrey has partnered with, and become part owner of, Weight Watchers.

Weight Watchers has suffered for the past few years due to the shift in what the consumer in the USA considers healthy eating. To boost its earnings, the company announced $100 million in cost cuts earlier this year. Since then she has spoken about being uncomfortable with posing for the cover of her magazine because of her weight gain.
