India’s most wanted criminal has been arrested in Bali after two decades on the run.

When the news of the arrested of gangster Chota Rajan in Indonesia first broke out, there was confusion over his identity with reports suggesting that the man arrested was serial killer Mohan Kumar alias “Cyanide” Mohan.

“We received information from police in Canberra yesterday (Sunday) about the red notice for a murderer”, Wiyanto told AFP.

Bali police are coordinating with Interpol and Indian authorities, Wiyanto said to AFP.

Australian Federal Police spokesperson said Interpol in Canada had alerted Indonesian authorities “who apprehended Nikalje at the request of Indian authorities”.

Interpol’s website says Nikalje was born in Mumbai, and was wanted for multiple charges including murder and possession and use of illegal firearms.

An Indian national has been taken into custody at Bali’s Ngurah Rai worldwide Airport working together with Airport police.

Kumar was sentenced to death by local Indian courts in December 2013 but he escaped.

Local media reported the man was also known as Cyanide Mohan, a 53-year-old former teacher who had confessed to the murders of 20 women between 2005 and 2009.

Cyanide Mohan preyed on women looking for marriage.

Nikalje told Indonesian police that he had been hiding in Australia for seven years and flew to Bali by a Garuda Indonesia flight for vacation. Kumar could be deported, or extradited to India, Nainggolan said to AFP.
