Sherlock: The Abominable Bride has been co-written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, directed by Douglas Mackinnon (Doctor Who, Line of Duty) and is produced by Hartswood Films for BBC One and co-produced by Masterpiece. There has also been an initial disparity in air dates for both USA and United Kingdom territories as the former usually gets the Sherlock episodes at a much later time due to marketing efforts.

If for a few reason you have plans on the evening of New Year’s Day (aghast), there will an encore airing on January 10. What about Dr. Watson, you ask?

THE long-awaited Sherlock Holmes special will air on New Year’s Day, it has been confirmed. The Victorian era of Sherlock will feature its usual camaraderie consisting of Mary Morstan (played by Amanda Abbington), Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves) and Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs). A trailer released shows what fans can expect from the episode, set in the time the character was conceived by Arthur Conan Doyle.

“Sherlock” showrunner Steven Moffat hesitated in labelling the series’ Victorian special episode a Christmas special when its trailer was released, and rightfully so since the episode’s release date will be after Christmas. Tickets are set to go on sale on November 2nd 2015. In actuality, it’s the same exact trailer that ran earlier this month, only this time with the new title and air date.

“Following the hit series” debut in 2010, “Sherlock” developed a pattern of releasing three episodes with 90 minutes each per season. The special will also be shown in select theaters the first week of 2016. “The special is its own thing”, said Moffat in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Benedict Cumberbatch will be back as “Sherlock” when the fourth series begins next spring
