Minivan carrying 6 kids rolls over, killing 10-year-old girl

A 10-year-old was killed after a minivan carrying several schoolchildren rolled over onto the sidewalk in front of the Plainfield Education Center Monday morning.

Plainfield Police said units responded to the crash at the intersection of West 9th Street and Arlington Avenue (just outside Plainfield High School) at 7:20 a.m.

The child’s name and sex have not been released.

Witnesses say the driver of the minivan was picking up children in the area to take them to school.

Six children, including the 10-year-old, were in the van that was being driven by a woman, police said.

The 10-year-old died shortly after the crash, while he other five children were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries, according to the report.

Police said the Taurus was driven by an adult male who was the sole occupant of the vehicle. No pedestrians were injured in the crash.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Police said rumors that the crash was the result of a police chase involving a stolen vehicle is not true.

A New Jersey State Police helicopter evacuated at least one of the wounded, the network said.
