Among the proposals the president is expected to promote at the annual conference of the global Association of Chiefs of Police is a push for national laws aimed eliminating disparities in gun regulations in different states.
White Home press secretary Josh Earnest conceded Mon.in that Chicago is a city with a high rate of gun crimes & homicide despite having very strict gun control laws.
Behind the chiefs are a diverse range of law enforcement groups that have come together on the issue.
Backing the effort is an alliance of organizations representing police chiefs and executives, such as the Major Cities Chiefs Association and groups representing women, Hispanic and African American law enforcement executives and police chiefs, as well as campus law enforcement administrators.
A tighter focus, they say, will prevent more, but not all, gun violence.
The call that such checks for all purchases and not just those from licensed gun dealers is not new.
“The coalition called on Congress to specifically expand background checks to cover all gun purchases”.
“It’s happening all over the country, and it’s happening all in the last 10 months”, Comey told the House Judiciary Committee. It is, however, a starting point for what could be a momentous achievement for the Obama administration and the current session of Congress. The government has been stung by critics arguing a recent series of mass shootings in the United States should offer momentum for changes in gun laws.

Already this year, at least 2,500 people have been shot on the streets of Chicago; that’s 400 more than last year at this time.
