Xbox Music renamed ‘Groove’ as Microsoft gears up for Windows 10 release

The new Phone Companion app in the latest Windows 10 Builds reveals that big changes are afoot for Xbox Music, Microsoft’s music streaming service.

Microsoft has always struggled to establish its own identity in the music business, and the turmoil may continue: Microsoft said Monday that Xbox Music is being rebranded as Groove Music.

Microsoft’s Groove will not differ greatly from the existing service, and will include its $10 a month (or $100 a year) streaming music service anchored to the 40-million-song Windows music store. He also touted a redesigned interface: “Getting into music is faster than ever with easy-to-use menus and navigation controls that work well with both mouse/keyboard, and with familiar touch gestures on touch-screen devices”.

Windows 10 will be made available on 29 July.

The Groove app will be available in both the light and dark themes, and you’ll be able to access it across your devices due to OneDrive integration. You’ll use it to download movies and shows or import them.

The most interesting feature will be continuous playback.

Start watching something on a Windows 10 device, on Xbox, or on the web, and purchased or rented content can be paused on one platform and then picked up from the same point on another. That’s something we’re very eager to test out ourselves.
