As it turned out, the only thing keeping Mallett’s release from happening before the game on Sunday was General Manager Rick Smith’s talking O’Brien off the ledge.

With Hoyer now firmly entrenched as the starter, Mallett began his disappearing act, first showing up late for the meetings on Saturday, then missing the team flight entirely.
The Texans will now have to find a backup to replace him because Hoyer is the only quarterback remaining on the active roster.
Mallett had an infamous case of “oversleeping” earlier this season, missed the team’s charter flight to Miami this weekend and essentially thumbed his nose at O’Brien’s authority. Mallett has completed 53 percent of his passes this season and three touchdowns compared to just four interceptions.
But the mere fact that someone within the organization is leaking the news that O’Brien and Smith disagree about what to do with Mallett suggests that there’s a fundamental problem with this franchise.
Mallett battled with veteran Brian Hoyer for Houston’s starting quarterback job during training camp, but ultimately lost the competition.

The Texans have had enough of Ryan Mallett, releasing the quarterback on Tuesday according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. Yates used to play for Houston back in 2011, when he was their fifth-round draft pick. He started in their first ever playoff win, but was eventually traded to the Atlanta Falcons just before the start of last season.

The possibility also can’t be ruled out of the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars or Tennessee Titans signing Mallett with the intent of gaining information of the Texans’ system in the competitive AFC South. The Texans had an issue at quarterback, and they did not see Mallett as the solution.
