8 schools in Hampton Roads denied accreditation
Thirteen schools were denied accreditation. “Strategies like allowing expedited Standards of Learning (SOL) retakes are helping more students and schools reach for success by measuring student achievement without pinning their futures on just one high stakes test. I look forward to working with the General Assembly this year to build on this momentum by enhancing our investment in K-12 education and further reforming the SOL’s”. Elkhardt-Thompson Middle School, formed over the summer, received conditional accreditation because it is a new school.

The three schools that were denied accreditation in Newport News were Mary Passage Middle School, Newsome Park Elementary School and Sedgefield Elementary School. The state makes slight adjustments based on the number of English language learners and also gives schools bonus points when a student who previously failed an exam passes it.
Tye River Elementary School in Nelson County is listed as a partially accredited – warned school, which means it isn’t achieving SOL pass rates and is not making acceptable progress toward those rates.
Partially accredited, reconstituted school – Schools that miss full accreditation requirements for four straight years but receive permission from the Virginia Board of Education to reconstitute, a process that can mean restructuring the leadership, instructional program, staff or student body.
More than 1,400 schools across Virginia are fully accredited, compared to close to 1,250 a year ago.
Virginia was one of a small number of states that did not adopt the Common Core State Standards, which many argued were more rigorous than previous state standards. High schools must graduate at least 85 percent of seniors. In 2012, all of the county’s schools received full accreditation.
Schools that make significant gains in test scores but still fall short are labeled “Partially Accredited: Improving School”. For this school, its English test scores fell just below the benchmark. Past year they were accredited with warning.
Five of the city’s seven middle schools’ accreditation status has not yet been determined, school report cards show.
