A man who allegedly rammed a stolen Lincoln Navigator into a Maryland police officer’s unmarked vehicle Monday morning is dead after he was shot by a state trooper at the scene, officials said.

Maryland State Police confirm a trooper was involved in a shooting Monday at a Sheetz gas station, which is located in the 1300 block of East Patrick Drive in Frederick. After running a check, he found the auto was reported stolen from Baltimore City Sunday night and requested backup.
At the same time, an officer with Frederick’s police department was approaching the scene in an unmarked vehicle with his emergency lights on when the SUV rammed into him.
Police say the suspect got out of the SUV and started to run from the scene. Maryland State Police say that video is now evidence.
Two other Frederick residents, Dennis Kline and Anna Smittenaar, said the man killed was a black male in his 40s and appeared to be changing his shirt when they first pulled into the Sheetz parking lot. Instead, the man climbed into the vehicle and began to speed away.
Police believe the driver intentionally hit the city officer to disable the vehicle, Shipley said. “At that time, the trooper was on foot, encountered that individual getting out of the vehicle, and the trooper fired his duty weapon, striking the suspect”, says Shipley. Shipley said a “confrontation occurred”, but did not have further details as to what the incident involved.
TFC Jansen and another State Police flight paramedic who arrived at the scene provided immediate emergency care.
The man’s identity was withheld, pending notification of his relatives. The case is under investigation.

The Frederick Police Officer who was pinned was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
