The Montana State athletic department announced that Hall of Fame point guard John Stockton has joined the women’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant coach.

Former Utah Jazz starter John Stockton is making his return to basketball.
Stockton, 53, replaces assistant Kellee Barney, who last seek left the Bobcats to enter private business and be near family in Seattle, which facilitated this surprising hire.
Stockton said in a statement Tuesday that MSU head coach Tricia Binford “took a flier” and asked if he’d be interested in the position.
“I’m excited about the prospect of working with the kids”, Stockton said, per the release. “They’re going to work hard, they’re good players, and I get to maintain that relationship with them. It will be a fun group to work with”. Stockton previously helped out with Lindsay and Bobcats sophomore guard Hannah Caudill at Gonzaga Prep in Spokane, Wash., as well as two others in AAU competition. He was one of the NBA’s smartest, most consistent and durable players of his time, and his coaching input will carry great weight given his history as a player. “We’ve had a few great times around basketball”. The Bobcats do not play in Ogden this year, but do face Southern Utah in Cedar City on February 13. The Spokane native lives in his hometown with his wife Nada. And as a parent, Stockton has been around the program for the past three seasons, which generates an air of familiarity between him and the players.

Montana State is slated to open the season November 4 when it hosts Montana Tech for an exhibition game.
