“Minimal” chance John Sullivan returns to Vikings in 2015

The Vikings placed center John Sullivan on injured reserve with the designation to return in early September after he had back surgery, which means we’re closing in on the date he’d be eligible to return to the lineup. Floyd has been having a nice season in the middle of Minnesota’s line.

Sharrif Floyd recently had a procedure to remove a “little piece of cartilage” from his left ankle, head coach Mike Zimmer told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. That’s the seventh-highest rate in the league, and the Vikings had hoped Sullivan – whom Bridgewater had praised for handling numerous Vikings’ protection calls during his rookie season – could help improve the unit when he came back.

The scariest part of that statement is at the very end, where Zimmer states that he’s unsure if Sullivan will return at all from the injury.

But, if John Sullivan does play another game for the Minnesota Vikings, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen this season.

Zimmer added that backup center Joe Berger will continue as the starter as long as he’s healthy.

The news is a blow for a Vikings offensive line that’s allowed pressure on 31.5 percent of quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s dropbacks, according to ESPN Stats and Information.

“I’ve heard all kinds of ranges, so we’ll see”, Zimmer said. “We’ve had a few mishaps here and there, where we’ve had the wrong assignments, but overall, he’s done a good job”.

Floyd missed last week’s game against Detroit and it’s not clear when he’ll return.
