‘Supergirl’ soars to fall’s biggest premiere ratings

And in the Washington Post, Hank Stuever compiles a short list for “everything it gets right”, including the writing and editing, the casting (“Benoist is one of those rare out-of-nowhere casting miracles”), the show’s “easy-breezy feminism”, and its “millennial wish-fulfillment”. It’s been 40 years since TV had a female superheroine lead – the last was ABC’s Wonder Woman, from 1975-1979 – so there are plenty of gender-equality issues to catch up on.

The plot began when 13-year-old Kara Zor-El was sent to Earth to protect her cousin Kar-El or Superman. By the time her ship crashed to Earth, she reverted to younger cousin. But she also has a Debbie downer of an adoptive sister named Alex who keeps telling her to pretend to be human and stay under the radar, which is a little tough for Kara.

Indeed, Melissa has been demonstrating her super powers in real life this week. In her 20s now, Kara is a mild-mannered assistant at the media company CatCo; but of course, the world really needs her to be more, and she must decide whether or not to take up the mantle of a superhero. Everyone wants to know who this woman is but this also makes her presence known to a few unsafe villains. It is up to her to try and stop them but she can not do it alone. And by having Winn know the truth that helped segway into the creation of her costume. And is there any hope of her succeeding in the face of such insurmountable odds? But once they discover Lumberjack’s weakness – the extreme temperate of his ax – Kara figures out that she can just heat it up with her eyes and make it explode.
