Planned Parenthood and other abortion care providers would be banned from receiving federal funds through programs including the Violence Against Women Act, the Breast and Cervical Cancer Mortality Prevention Act, the Minority AIDS Initiative, the Infant Mortality Reduction Initiative or infant vitality initiatives, and the Personal Responsibility Education Program. The group is barred by federal law from using taxpayer money for abortion services.
Under a budget rule known as “reconciliation”, Republicans can pass the bill through the Senate with a simple 51-vote majority, rather than the 60-vote threshold that has stymied other attempts. They asked for patient health records and billing documents dating back to 2010, as well as personnel files that included the home addresses of staff members, Planned Parenthood said.
“The state requested an extensive amount of information to be presented within 24 hours”, Tafolla said.
“There have been several videos of wrongdoings that should concern citizens regardless of their partisanship”, Peregory said.
“The gruesome harvesting of baby body parts by Planned Parenthood will not be allowed in Texas and the barbaric practice must be brought to an end”, Abbott said in a statement on Monday.
Republicans are scheduled to vote in conference on Wednesday and on the House floor Thursday.
