He is now certain to miss Ireland’s attempt to win a third Six Nations Championship in a row next spring, as well as Ulster’s upcoming European Champions Cup campaign.

Tommy Bowe will not play any part in next year’s Six Nations after Ulster confirmed the winger had been ruled out for six months with a knee injury.

In addition, Henderson, who enjoyed an incredible breakout tournament, will have surgery today to stabilise a joint in his hand, an issue which also occurred in the defeat to Los Pumas.

Meanwhile, Jared Payne’s foot injury which prevented him from lining out in Ireland’s final three games has also been stabilised with surgery.

Payne, who suffered a fractured foot, underwent a successful operation but is awaiting his first post-operative review, after which a prognosis will be known.

In a statement, Ulster confirmed that the 31-year-old went under the knife on October 26 and his recovery time is estimated at around six months.
