Most malls have Halloween activities.

Plan a trick-or-treating route.

This year, Halloween falls on a weekend night, providing a greater opportunity for trick-or-treaters to stay out late and more adults to attend parties where alcohol and/or marijuana is offered. A few hospitals and schools allow children to trick or treat by going from room to room, virtually eliminating the dangers associated with being out walking on the street after dark. Options include getting help from a buddy, calling home or going to a safe neighbour. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape.

Police also remind parents to check the candy children collect, eliminating any candy that is unwrapped or that has a damaged wrapper. “Please” and “thank you” are classics for a reason – they work. If unsure, throw the candy out.

Halloween is one of the most anticipated nights of the year for kids.

NEVER go into the home of a stranger, even if you are invited in for a treat.

Drive extra cautiously! If you’re driving your kids around to trick or treat, make sure you’re looking out for foot traffic and other cars.

They can hit the streets and return with a bountiful haul of candy.

Make sure your yard is clear of debris or hazards that might injure someone. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.

Costume masks can make it harder for a trick-or-treater to see. All costumes and masks should be clearly marked as flame resistant. You will want to stay away from a previously opened package or anything that has been punctured, as well as any homemade goodies; so save the treats for later and focus on enjoying the ambiance of the evening. Consider face paint or makeup as an alternative.
