Grizzly bear shatters barrier at Minnesota Zoo

APPLE VALLEY, Minn.- A grizzly bear exhibit at the Minnesota Zoo is temporarily closed after a bear picked up a basketball-sized rock and repeatedly pushed it against a glass barrier.

“He was just being a bear”, the zoo’s animal collections manager, Tony Fisher, told the paper. The area will be closed until a temporary fix can be made ahead of a permanent pane being installed.

This was the scene after a grizzly bear picked up a huge boulder and tried to smash the glass of its zoo enclosure in front of shocked visitors.

The zoo says on its website that he likes to wrestle and “when it comes time to new things, he’s most likely to be the first to try them”. Grizzlies typically top out at 800 to 900 pounds.

Staff suspect Kenai, a almost full-grown male bear, was responsible for the attempted break-out.

Rocks and other items in the exhibit that bears are strong enough to lift are supposed to be secured in place, Fisher said. “He didn’t know what he was doing”. The zoo plans to go through the exhibit and make sure everything else is anchored down correctly.
