The American Red Cross Offers Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips
Hordes of costumed children will be out on the streets as adults head to their Halloween parties on Saturday.

Students from the drama department at Southeast Guilford High School are working on a service project called “Trick or Treat so Kids Can Eat”.
Excitement is building for young people across Jacksonville as Halloween approaches but several groups are urging extra caution this holiday weekend.
Dr. Koniarczyk said it’s okay for older kids to go trick or treating with friends, as long as they follow a few basic rules.
“Kids often dart out from in-between cars, so not just at cross walks, look out for kids everywhere when driving down the street”, said Holly Alway, injury prevention coordinator at Mercy Health. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left-hand side of the street, facing traffic.
Only accept wrapped treats. Consider donating excess candy or storing away for special occasions.
Always cut open your trick-or- treat fruit before you take your first bite from it.
Additionally, both counties ask that residents who wish to receive trick-or-treaters identify themselves by putting on their front porch lights. NEVER enter a house or a vehicle for a treat. All treats should be accepted on the doorstep only.
Don’t want to go door-to-door to collect candy?
The local trick-or-treating, as recommended by the police agencies, is 6-8 p.m. Friday. The Chicago Park District is hosting Halloween-themed parties in several parks through October 31.
