This is McIlroy’s first start in the Turkish Airlines Open, which announced an extension of three years with the European Tour and will remain a part of the lucrative Final Series.

Former world number one Rory McIlroy believes he is close to full fitness as he seeks to end an injury-disrupted season in style by claiming a third Race to Dubai title. I’m just concentrating on myself and trying to play the best that I can.

“It would mean an terrible lot to win the Race to Dubai”. Like to win at least one of these last three events I’m playing.

His best finish in that spell was a tie for fourth at the BMW Championship and McIlroy feels his form is starting to come around now he is able to train properly. This week is another opportunity to see where my game is, try to get into contention and try to win.

He is in the rearview mirror of Rory McIlroy and, as luck – or design perhaps – would have it, the Offaly man has been handed a tee-time with Down man for the opening two rounds of the Turkish Airlines Open on The Montgomerie course, where big bucks and mega points in the race for the Race to Dubai will contribute to a sharpening of minds and a flexing of muscles.

It was a season of promise when it dawned, but as the months rolled by, it was clear that 2015 belonged to Jordan Spieth and not Rory McIlroy, at least in the majors. Now I’m trying to get my game back into the shape that I know that I can. So streaky, I’ll always be somewhat of a streaky putter.

McIlroy’s injury ruled him out of the Scottish Open and the defence of his Open and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational titles. “I had a great chance back in 2009 to win and didn’t quite; Lee (Westwood) pipped me there”. I felt like sometimes I was making it a little bit more complicated than it has to be.

“I feel like I hole out well, definitely much better than I used to do, and when I get my eye in, I’m really good”. I feel like I hole out well. “My golf is kind of carefree and I don’t want to put too much stuff into my head”, said Lowry.

“So it’s sort of been sort of two steps forward and one step back a little bit since I’ve come back from injury, and I would just like to keep moving forward these next four weeks and try to finish the season on a positive note”. I’ve felt like every time I missed the putt, there was a question that followed it. Did I pull it?

As for his ankle, McIlroy revealed he has stepped up his fitness regime recently, adding: ” I’m pretty much back to where I need to be. “The good thing for me is I can draw on a few of the great performances and memories I have from winning big tournaments and knowing that if I’ve done that before, there is no reason why I can’t do that again”, he said.

“But I am confident in my own game and look forward try and win the Race to Dubai for a third time”.
