Texans release backup QB Ryan Mallett after missed flight

The Texans dumped the quarterback after he missed the team’s charter flight to Florida this past weekend.

Then came Saturday and Mallett’s excuse that traffic made him late, an issue none of his teammates or coaches had. They’re at home Sunday against Tennessee. “I gotta get better at that [gunner]”. Had the report about O’Brien’s interest in cutting Mallett not leaked, would the quarterback still have been cut?

Coach Bill O’Brien said Monday he expects Foster to miss the rest of the season but didn’t elaborate on the injury to Foster’s right leg.

Hoyer has since taken over as starter, leading the team to a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars and a blow-out loss against the Dolphins on Sunday in Miami. “That’s not the leadership role I need to exhibit. She’s a lawyer. Maybe I’ll bring her to the next press conference, and you can direct all contractual questions to her”.

Asked if there was a confrontation with Smith over the move, O’Brien on Wednesday said, “No”, insisting that the two consistently work out their disagreements.

Look, I realize he has not been a very good QB thus far.

The next red flag this season came during the Thursday night contest with Indianapolis where Mallett left the game after taking a hard tackle. “It’s – you hate to see that stuff because it’s not how it should be”.

“I think it’s been decent”, he said.

Mallett, signed by Houston this offseason to compete with veteran journeyman Brian Hoyer, seemed the early favorite to take the starting gig for a Texans team hopeful of making only their third trip to the postseason in franchise history. The Texans’ 2014 fourth-round pick, Tom Savage, is on injured reserve, and Zac Dysert is on the practice squad. We might hear otherwise from O’Brien, but nobody believes he wouldn’t have flip-flopped on the decision of who to start at his team’s most important position again if things went sour.

‘I don’t know, ‘ he said. “Youve got to be on time, ” Mallett said after the game. I get that. In his career, Mallett has completed just 53.1% of his passes, for 1,187 yards, five TDs and seven interceptions.

A Bleacher Report piece from 2012 by Randolph Charlotin pointed out that Mallett, then a second-year player, showed no signs of changing after a full season in the league. He engineered a game-winning drive at Cincinnati in Week 14, and the Texans would clinch their first AFC South title moments later when the Titans lost to New Orleans.
