End of the road: deGrom fades in 5th, Mets drop Game 2

Johnny Cueto, who fluctuated between ghastly and grand in his first three postseason starts, pitched a two-hit complete game as the Kansas City Royals topped the New York Mets 7-1 Wednesday night to take a two-games-to-none lead in the World Series. They took him into the manager’s office and closed the door. Royals RHP Yordano Ventura and Mets RHP Noah Syndergaard are the probables for Game 3 on Friday in New York. He managed only two strikeouts, matching a season low. “But I don’t know if I’ll be ready for that appearance”, he said.

In fact, Cueto’s outing was the first complete game by an AL pitcher in World Series play since Jack Morris went the distance in Game 7 back in 1991. He’s well-rested, having pitched last eight days ago.

“That certainly is a possibility”. “We didn’t win a ballgame”, Murphy said.

“I try not to say, ‘Don’t use that anymore, ‘ because it’s been an effective move for him”, Collins said.

Gov. Cuomo has canceled two political fund-raisers in which he was planning to offer Mets World Series tickets for $5,500 apiece, sources said.

– Daniel Murphy is not flawless, but he is still really good. “We’ve got to make better pitches and we’ve got to play better”.

Last season’s NL Rookie of the Year, deGrom has tossed 216 innings in 2015, including the postseason.

Still, pitching coach Dan Warthen doesn’t see fatigue.

Royals second baseman Ben Zobrist has been given marching orders from his wife, Julianna, if she happens to go into labor with their third child in the midst of the World Series.

He came out firing 97-98 miles per hour fastballs and zipped through three hitless innings on 38 pitches.

He retired Salvador Perez on a bases-loaded grounder to end the inning, but lost his touch in the fifth. Red-hot Alcides Escobar, who had an inside-the-park-homer in Game 1, had two more hits, including an RBI triple. “I told Jake not everything has to be a strike”.

“I had pitchers, you couldn’t shake their hand because you couldn’t get your hand away from them”, Collins said, drawing laughs. You’ve got to change speeds, give them something to look at.

Volquez said he was in a lot of pain as his eyes welled with tears while he attended his father’s memorial service a day before the funeral.

But he apparently loves the mound at Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium. You have to stay with him. Mets CF Juan Lagares, who had two hits off the bench Tuesday, started Game 2…. “It was just one of those nights. There were a couple of pitches I’d like to have back, the ones in the middle that ended up in the stands (as foul balls)”. He was replaced by Hansel Robles in the sixth. I didn’t do a very good job in extra innings. They mortgaged much of their future to acquire him, sending three left-handers – all considered top prospects – to Cincinnati at the trading deadline, even though it amounted to a short-term rental. “They keep the line moving”, catcher Travis d’Arnaud said.
