Honda FCV Clarity shown at Tokyo Motor Show

“Until this point, fuel cells have been so large that they needed to be packaged elsewhere in the vehicle, like in Toyota’s Mirai, which has its fuel cell stack in the centre of the vehicle, cutting into interior space”, Nick Jaynes writes for Mashable. I think it’s irreversible. But this thing kind of looks like that taxi from the original Total Recall movie, doesn’t it?

Currently, Honda is putting in the final touches on new turbocharged VTEC units, which have more power, torque and performance at just 1-liter than other aspirated engines and consumes significantly less fuel.

Clean generation of hydrogen from a wide range of primary energy sources will make local, self-sufficient power generation a global reality, and fuel cell vehicles will take on a new role as power sources within their communities. A team driving five B-Class F-CELL refilled at four permanent hydrogen fueling stations located in Burbank, Coalinga, West Sacramento and Emeryville, accumulating almost 1,000 miles over the course of their three day trip.

Tesla, and owner Elon Musk, have been adamant that hydrogen is not the answer and that we must focus on pure battery power to create a better automotive future. The li-ion battery packs are under the floor.

Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice president of BMW Group design, presents the new BMW 740Li at the Tokyo Motor Show this week.

“During this period, Honda will collect information about the market use situation, including the external power feeding device, and gather diverse opinions from customers and other relevant organizations, then later begin sales to individual customers”, Honda stated. Honda and General Motors have entered into a joint-venture project to expand the hydrogen refueling station infrastructure beginning in 2020.

There have also been reports that Honda will use the Clarity’s underpinnings for previously-announced battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models, both of which should appear by 2018. Honda engineers continue to emphasize a goal of transparency to the customer coming from traditional vehicles, yet what Elon Musk’s cult of owners have found is that driving an electric can in a few ways trump the experience delivered by internal-combustion engines.

The Clarity Fuel Cell will be available in three colours, Premium Brilliant Garnet Metallic, which is seen on the show auto, White Orchid Pearl (on the preview models) and Crystal Black Pearl. Making the case for such a strategy in the United States is hard when gas is going for an average of $2.19 a gallon, but the math changes when you consider fuel prices inevitably will go up and the fact we’ve got to deal with climate change.
