Daylight savings time ends on November 1, and Caledon Fire & Emergency Services is recommending residents check all electrical and battery operated alarms and install new batteries when changing the clocks this weekend.

During its first round of blitzes, firefighters visited homes in the areas of Shiloh Road, Oak Ridge Road and Cenie Road, going door to door to check with residents to see if their homes were protected by working smoke detectors. “Everyone can relate to removing a smoke detector battery to stop the annoying “chirp” with the intention of replacing it, but life gets busy and we simply forget”, said Jay Groth, the firm’s founder.

Last fall, the Red Cross launched the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign to reduce the number of deaths and injuries due to home fires by 25 percent over the next five years.

The Tennessee Region of the American Red Cross and Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office have teamed up to save lives across the state. “And then a second page home fire safety check list with common hazards to be aware of”, said Michael Etter, of the American Red Cross.

Another type of annual maintenance you can perform on your smoke and CO alarms is to vacuum them out when you change the batteries. They take out the battery and never replace it, so a lot of times we’re into homes where it’s there. In Fort Dodge, volunteers and firefighters installed more than 189 new smoke alarms.

Be sure your home has both smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.

There are two major types of smoke alarms: ionization for detecting fast burning fires such as a stove top fire; and photoelectric for smoldering fires that includes a discarded cigarette in a waste basket. They say each time they go out they find less and less homes with alarms needing updates.
