Calhanoglu, 21, has established himself as one of the best young talents in the Bundesliga in recent seasons, and the free-kick specialist has scored 18 goals in 63 games in all competitions for Leverkusen.

Schade explained: “We want to keep Hakan, but with us there is a pain threshold”.

The midfielder is also attracting interest from Spanish giants Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Under the terms of that agreement, United will have to meet the €40 million (£29m) release clause that comes as part of that deal.

When asked whether he is aware of Manchester United’s interest in the player, the Leverkusen CEO said: “I can see that, but I am calm and relaxed”.

Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller told Sport Bild: “It is true that we had several enquiries, but we did not want to sell the player, which would weaken us”.

One confident Arsenal fan by the pool table has declared that if he really is the new Ozil then North London is the destination for him, as he can learn from the man himself.
